# Taxes

> How Sevalla adds sales tax, VAT and GST to invoices from your billing address, where it collects them, and how to add a VAT number, GSTIN or other tax ID.

Sevalla's prices exclude tax. Stripe calculates the tax for each invoice from the company's billing address and any tax ID on file, and adds it on top of the usage. This page doesn't constitute legal or tax advice: for questions about your own obligations, ask your accountant or tax authority.

## How tax is calculated

| What | How it works |
| - | - |
| What decides the tax | The billing address and tax ID in the Stripe customer portal. See [Update billing details](/billing/payments#update-billing-details). |
| Rate | The standard rate for digital services where you're located |
| Where you see it | The tax line on each invoice. The [Usage page](/billing/usage) shows each cost **Net** (before tax) and **Gross** (with tax), and the create forms' cost estimates include tax. |
| When a change applies | A new address or tax ID applies to the next invoice. Sevalla can't refund tax already charged, so add your tax ID before the invoice is created on the 1st. |

Sevalla needs a valid billing address (at least address line 1, city, postal code and country) for tax and invoicing, which is why the dashboard asks for it before a company can use resources.

## Where Sevalla collects tax

| Where you're located | Tax |
| - | - |
| European Union | VAT at your country's standard rate. With a valid EU VAT number, no VAT is charged and the reverse charge applies. |
| United Kingdom | VAT at the standard rate. With a valid UK VAT number, no VAT is charged and the reverse charge applies. |
| India | GST. With a valid GSTIN, no GST is charged and you account for it under the reverse charge. |
| United States: Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Washington | State and local sales tax, which varies by city and state |

Sevalla adds locations as tax rules require, and tells affected customers before it starts collecting.

## Add a tax ID

<Info>
  Only company owners, admins and billing users can add a tax ID.
</Info>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Stripe customer portal">
    In the sidebar, under **Company**, click **Billing**, then click **Manage billing**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Update the billing information">
    Click **Update information**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the tax ID">
    Under the tax ID, pick the type for your country (for example EU VAT, GB VAT or IN GST), enter the number, and click **Save**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Stripe checks the number against the official registry (VIES for EU VAT, HMRC for UK VAT) and accepts it only if it's valid and active. Make sure the billing address is in the same country as the tax ID; for a GSTIN, in the same state.

### Tax ID formats

| Tax ID | Format | Example |
| - | - | - |
| EU VAT number | The two-letter country code, then the national number, no spaces or punctuation | `BE0661333385` |
| UK VAT number | 9 or 12 digits, with or without `GB` | `GB123456789` |
| GSTIN | 15 characters, issued on the [GST portal](https://www.gst.gov.in/) | `22AAAAA0000A1Z5` |

National tax numbers that aren't EU VAT numbers don't remove VAT. Check an EU VAT number on the [European Commission's VIES site](https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/) and a UK one on [HMRC's checker](https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-vat-number/enter-vat-details).

## Still charged VAT or GST

If an invoice still has VAT or GST after you added a tax ID, check that:

* The number is valid and active in VIES, HMRC or the GST portal. An EU VAT number must be registered for intra-EU trade in VIES, not only nationally.
* It's entered in the right format, with the right type.
* The billing address matches the tax ID's country (and, for a GSTIN, its state).
* The tax ID was on file before the invoice was created. Tax on earlier invoices can't be refunded: claim it back through your own tax return.

If everything checks out, [contact support](/support/get-help) with the invoice number.

## US sales tax exemption

If your organization is exempt from sales tax, [contact support](/support/get-help) with a copy of your tax exemption certificate. Exemptions are handled state by state: your state's Department of Revenue can tell you whether you qualify.
