Sevalla’s prices exclude tax. Stripe calculates the tax for each invoice from the company’s billing address and any tax ID on file, and adds it on top of the usage. This page doesn’t constitute legal or tax advice: for questions about your own obligations, ask your accountant or tax authority.

How tax is calculated

Sevalla needs a valid billing address (at least address line 1, city, postal code and country) for tax and invoicing, which is why the dashboard asks for it before a company can use resources.

Where Sevalla collects tax

Sevalla adds locations as tax rules require, and tells affected customers before it starts collecting.

Add a tax ID

Only company owners, admins and billing users can add a tax ID.
1

Open the Stripe customer portal

In the sidebar, under Company, click Billing, then click Manage billing.
2

Update the billing information

Click Update information.
3

Enter the tax ID

Under the tax ID, pick the type for your country (for example EU VAT, GB VAT or IN GST), enter the number, and click Save.
Stripe checks the number against the official registry (VIES for EU VAT, HMRC for UK VAT) and accepts it only if it’s valid and active. Make sure the billing address is in the same country as the tax ID; for a GSTIN, in the same state.

Tax ID formats

National tax numbers that aren’t EU VAT numbers don’t remove VAT. Check an EU VAT number on the European Commission’s VIES site and a UK one on HMRC’s checker.

Still charged VAT or GST

If an invoice still has VAT or GST after you added a tax ID, check that:
  • The number is valid and active in VIES, HMRC or the GST portal. An EU VAT number must be registered for intra-EU trade in VIES, not only nationally.
  • It’s entered in the right format, with the right type.
  • The billing address matches the tax ID’s country (and, for a GSTIN, its state).
  • The tax ID was on file before the invoice was created. Tax on earlier invoices can’t be refunded: claim it back through your own tax return.
If everything checks out, contact support with the invoice number.

US sales tax exemption

If your organization is exempt from sales tax, contact support with a copy of your tax exemption certificate. Exemptions are handled state by state: your state’s Department of Revenue can tell you whether you qualify.
